Social Media & The Mullet

AwesomenessDo you treat your social media like the iconic haircut – The Mullet? Business in the front, party in the back! The Mullet is really two haircuts on one person. One person trying to pull off both looks, at the same time. Short hair in the front and long hair down the back. Interesting concept, but is it effective in its goal of general awesomeness? Or do people who are brave enough to sport the Mullet just end up looking like they couldn’t make a decision between two styles, so they try to pull off both?

I think social media and the Mullet have a lot in common. Sometimes companies struggle with what to put on their social media profiles. I see this struggle lead to indecision, which leads to lack of direction.  What happens is a mix of business and personal posts end up on the company’s profiles. They try to pull off two looks on one profile – a social media Mullet.

As a general rule of thumb, two looks on one social media profile rarely works out. So, the best advice I have to offer is to first identify a clear voice for your company’s social media presence, and then follow through with posts and status updates that express that voice. If you do this, you should be in the clear.

Oh, and if you have a Mullet, please don’t take offense to this post. If you can rock a Mullet, you are probably just awesome and can kick butt at whatever you attempt!
